Matter in CASENGINE resembles to a physical file folder which contains the client's cases and corporate projects.

Creating Matter
There can be multiple ways to add Matters:
- From the "(+)" quick create option that is always visible in the header
- Navigate from Left menu to "Matters" -> "Existing Matters" -> Look for a (+) icon.
- While creating a case -> Look for a (+) icon near the matter selection.
Once you are on the Matter Creation Page, you will be able to add the following details:
- Request Number - Optional field to select the Legal Service Request number if available. Generally it is used when the request came from other departments to open the matter in the form of LSR (Legal Service Request). We will understand the flow of LSR in other articles.
- Matter Number - in case this is set to manual. Read Matter Number Sequencing
- Description - this should contain the brief description to identify the matter example "Real Estate - Failure to adhere Signed Contract Commitment for paying USD 540,000 "
- Opponents / Other Parties - Add the opponents or other parties related to this matter
- Registered By or Against - Select if the matter is register by your client or against your client
- Billing Selection - to make all time entries to be defaulted to non billable, which means whenever a lawyer records time under this matter, it will be non billable by default, however can be altered to billable at the time of recording.
- Client - Select the client for this matter, add a new client if needed on the go by clicking the (+) icon
- Opening Date - by default it is today's date but you can chose to open the matter backdated.
- Practice Area - Select the practice area such as Litigation, Arbitration etc.
- Office - Select the office in which the matter is being executed in case of multiple offices.
- Responsible Lawyer - Select the lawyer who will be responsible for this matter, however cases and projects under this matter can have different lawyers responsible.
- Supervising Lawyers - Select one or more lawyers who will be supervising this matter. They will have limited access to the cases and the projects under this matter.
- Notes - add any notes that you may have
- External Links - add any relevant links/URLs for reference
- Attachments - upload one or many documents that you might need to link with this matter. Remember to mention the expiry dates of the document that have an expiry date.
Press Submit to create the Matter!
